Who We Are

We are Abbalak Thunderswift Memorial School, proudly serving the children and families of Little Grand Rapids First Nation in eastern Manitoba.

Our school is a place where learning, culture, and community come together to help our students grow into confident, capable, and proud members of our Nation.

We provide education from Nursery through Grade 10, following the Manitoba provincial curriculum while also weaving Ojibwe language instruction and cultural learning into our programs. We believe that strong academics and a strong cultural identity go hand in hand in preparing our students for the future.

We are more than a school-we are the heart of our community. We host cultural gatherings, seasonal feasts, sports events, and celebrations that bring together students, families, and Elders. Our school is a place where achievements are recognized, traditions are respected, and community spirit is strong.

We take pride in preparing our students for life after graduation-whether that means pursuing post-secondary education, learning a trade, or contributing their skills and talents within our community. We are committed to helping our young people succeed while staying connected to the language, traditions, and values of Little Grand Rapids First Nation.

Located along the shores of Family Lake, our school provides a safe and welcoming environment for students from early years through graduation. Our facilities include classrooms for all grade levels, spaces for cultural programs, a gymnasium for sports and recreation, and areas designed for hands-on, creative, and land-based learning.

Our classrooms are welcoming and engaging spaces where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore their creativity, and challenge themselves. We integrate traditional teachings and land-based learning, giving our students opportunities to connect with the environment and gain skills that have been passed down for generations. Elders and community members play an active role in sharing knowledge and supporting our learning journey
