Programs and Services

We follow the Manitoba provincial curriculum, ensuring our students meet academic standards recognized across the province and beyond. At the same time, we incorporate the language, traditions, and knowledge of the Ojibwe people into our teaching.

At Abbalak Thunderswift Memorial School, we believe in combining solid academic preparation with cultural connection and community spirit. We aim to give our students the confidence, skills, and sense of belonging they need to move forward while staying rooted in who they are.

Our approach includes:

  • A strong focus on literacy, numeracy, science, and the arts
  • Ojibwe language lessons and cultural projects led by Elders and community members
  • Land-based learning that connects students to the environment and traditional skills
  • Opportunities for leadership, mentorship, and personal development

With support from Manitoba First Nations SchoolNet (MFNS) and others, we offer resources, cultural programs, and technology to strengthen learning.

Our Role in the Community

We are more than a school-we are a central gathering place for Little Grand Rapids. We host and support:

  • Seasonal feasts and cultural ceremonies
  • School sports teams and community tournaments
  • Special events celebrating student achievement and milestones
  • Learning opportunities for families and community members
